Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Drive to walk

Today's Atlanta Journal-Constitution has an article, "Atlantic Station's gentle push for a family-friendly atmosphere," subtitled "Stroller get-togethers: Fresh air, store discounts and samples propel popularity," about a mommies walking promotion at Atlantic Station, the new urban development in Atlanta.

The thing is that they don't understand the contradiction of having to drive somewhere to go walk. Walking to accomplish tasks and activities without having to drive somewhere first should be the preferred course of action. Fortunately, there are many neighborhoods within DC and inner ring suburbs that are walkable without having to drive.

And by walking or biking during your normal course of activity, you don't have to join a gym either.

The print copy has some nice photos of the stroller brigade and it is a much longer story than the online version. The print story includes information on the various purchasing inducements provided to the shopper-walkers.
