Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

A problem with data about being understored

is that it doesn't include cross-border information. For example, I can think of at least 5 full line supermarkets within 1.5 miles of the border between DC and Maryland vis-a-vis Ward 5. The same goes for supermarkets along the line of Ward 4. And a few years ago checking out vacant properties on the demolition list, I seem to recall at least one supermarket on the Prince George's side of Southern Avenue, across from Ward 8.

(See "Signs of Change Line the Shelves," subtitled "Grocery Arrives In Reviving Ward 8," from today's Post.)
