Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Another great quote from Christopher Hume

(I tend to skim his columns every couple months, as they are archived on the Toronto Star website.)

-- 'We must question the way we build, not just what we build'

If nothing else, it's clear the time has come when we must question the way we build, not just what we build. In fact, the two are inseparable. A quick look at other jurisdictions provides ample evidence that there are better methods of producing housing, and not just low-cost housing, but stuff that accommodates both human and civic needs. There's precious little of that in North Toronto, a neighbourhood that like so many in this city succeeds despite itself.

From "The popular 'urban village'."
