Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Hardcore sustainable urban living

is practiced by the Rhizome Collective in Austin, Texas, according to this article, "Cheaper methods for an environmentally sound lifestyle: Advocates have tips to help the green-minded with a tight budget," in the Austin American-Statesman.

This June, the collective is coming out with what looks to be a very interesting book, A Do-it-Ourselves Guide for Sustainable City Living to be published by South End Press and they have an interesting training that goes along with it, an intensive weekend workshop called RUST - Radical Urban Sustainability Training.

It makes LEED certification for buildings look pretty tame, not to mention a Prius...
