Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Streetcars (and rapid bus) in DC

The Post's Dr. Gridlock column yesterday features a gargantuan map of the proposed streetcar and rapid bus system in DC.

One additional rapid bus route I would consider would be for 14th Street NW (the 50s buses).

Also, I see the rapid bus proposed for Rhode Island Avenue. This bus route could be extended west to Dupont Circle, and east from the DC line up to College Park/University of Maryland. Of course, I think this could be a streetcar line. I suggested it during the streetcar studies a few years ago, and separately in the late 1990s, the Maryland Transit Administration studied this for the part of Rhode Island Avenue in Maryland.
