Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

More and more, in the work that I do, tI find that the principles of urban design, the experience on the street, are so important, but is pretty much neglected in the context of zoning, which focuses on individual buildings, not the overall quality of the experience of place.

And people don't really understand it much.

I need to crack open Cy Paumier's Creating a Vibrant City Center... and Jan Gehl's Close Encounters with Buildings.
