Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

DC Streetcars operating now

just not in DC...

David sends us notice of this piece from WTOP, "D.C. streetcars roll in Czech Republic."

The city could probably make some money by "selling" these streetcars to other systems that need them now, and as part of the "sales price," getting in return their places in the manufacturing queue down the line, closer to the time when DC might be able to actually launch the system.

Similarly, VRE leases some Sound Transit rail cars, because Sound Transit didn't have the demand for them, and VRE does. But that's why a bunch of the cars have the Sounder Railroad paint scheme.
