Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Downtown Lawrence Gets It, Maybe certain neighborhoods in NYC don't

The Boston Globe reports, in "Downtown byway gets a new look," that Essex Street in Lawrence, Massachusetts, is being converted back to a two-way street--they recognized that when the Downtown was successful,t he street was two way--to slow down traffic, and bring more activity to the commercial district.

Via Streetsblog, we learn that a local community board is considering fighting a dedicated bike path, which does go through a no cars area. See "Is CB 8 Angling to Get Rid of Bike Lanes on 91st Street?" Other Streetsblog, coverage reports on how difficult it is to get Community Boards (like DC's Advisory Neighborhood Commissions, and other cities have similar types of community-based elected representation) to support non-automobile based transportation, mobility, and urban design and placemaking improvements.
