Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Seeing this sign, on the unit block of K Street NW, reminded me of the books set in DC, written by George Pelecanos. A couple weekends ago I read Drama City, which was lent to me by Frozen Tropics. There is a rote sameness to the structure of the various novels, but I still like the descriptions of the city, the versimilitude... there may be more truth to the books, and the revised by graffiti sign than we want to acknowledge.
