Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Bike to Work Day, Friday May 16th

Melissa Esposito, Car-Sharing and Bike-Sharing Program Coordinator, Arlington County Commuter Services, writes:

I just wanted to let you know that the last day for pre-registration of Bike to Work Day, Friday May 16th, is coming up on Friday, May 9.

Pre-registration is free and lets commuters receive a free t-shirt along with being entered to win bikes and other prizes.

Print off one of the flyers and put it up in your office... there are 13 participating locations in Maryland, 12 locations in Virginia, plus Downtown DC.

Sadly, a friend got her bicycle stolen, but this made me check to see if Bike the Sites still has last year rent-a-bikes for sale (they buy new models every year) and they do, good city bikes for $160.

Today's bicycle model, Will, demonstrates that you don't need to wear spandex to ride a bike to work.

Even if some bicycle riders look better than others.

Or have bicycles more suitable for day to day living in the city, like this Xtracycle capable of hauling loads home from the grocery store, or children, ridden by our "model" from Brookland...
