Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Supporting arts institutions vs. the support of artist production

The Notions Capital blog has an entry about the Caos on F Street studios and makes broader points about how the area "support of artists" by government and nonprofits has been misdirected. See "Arts and the City." He focuses on live-work housing for artists vs. various types of support spaces, studios, rehearsal spaces, etc., for artists. Indirectly, the latter supports the development of artist networks and community--the network effect.
