Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Burying the lead: National Harbor provides transportation options for guests, not for employees

In the previous entry, "Frustration #3: the talk about transit oriented development and Prince George's County," I really did bury the lead.

It's clear from the description on the transportation shuttle page on the National Harbor website that they provide a shuttle from the King Street Metro station in Alexandria to and from National Harbor for guests and tenants, but not for workers ("At booming National Harbor, commuting is a daily trial for service workers" from the Post).

That's unconscionable.

And I don't understand how Prince George's County didn't require that National Harbor meet transportation demand management planning requirements that included serving all segments of transportation demand for the development, especially employees.

... which is what makes me sadly skeptical about all of Prince George's County's talk about their new focus on "transit oriented development."

"passengers should simply present their hotel key card or resident/employee card upon entry"

Seems like employees are eligible also.

But:
Service ends from National Harbor at 7:34pm.

Nevermind, seems only "Office Workers" are eligible - based on the PDF linked above.

yep, tenants of the buildings as employees, but not service employees of the same facilities.

Pretty discriminatory.
