Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Community Building #1: today is Pittsburgh's Arts Day of Giving

The Tuesday after Thanksgiving, Giving Tuesday, is a day--modeled after "Black Friday" shopping day, the growing "Small Business Saturday" after Thanksgiving promotion by American Express (Amex members can get small credits, up to $30, for shopping at small businesses) and Cyber Monday, the e-commerce shopping day--to promote charitable giving.

The Pittsburgh Foundation has taken that one better by organizing an annual Arts Day of Giving exclusive to that region, which happens to be today, October 2nd.

Donations made between 6am today and midnight will be matched--therefore doubled.

And they have a live counter on the website, which increments upward with each donation--in the time since I started writing this entry, the total donations have increased by more than $40,000.
