Dan Tangherlini Joins Metro Board as alternate

Although this was mentioned in a Washington Post article a couple weeks ago, apparently this was voted upon by the DC City Council on March 1st, and is now official, according to the press release below:

Dan Tangherlini Joins Metro's Board of Directors -

Dan Tangherlini, Director of the District of Columbia Department of Transportation, was sworn in to the Board of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (Metro) as an alternate representative for the District of Columbia. Mr. Tangherlini replaces Calvin Joplin on the Metro Board.

Mr. Tangherlini's appointment to the Metro Board was approved by the District of Columbia City Council Committee on the Whole on Tuesday, March 1.

"Mr. Tangherlini plans to work with the Board to focus on providing Metrorail and bus service that is safe, clean, reliable, convenient and reasonably priced for both riders and taxpayers," said Gladys Mack, Vice Chair of Metro's Board of Directors. "He will emphasize the importance of bus service and the need to better integrate bus and rail. As a 14-year daily Metro rider, he will focus on customer needs and issues. He will promote additional service, including the Downtown Circulator and the Anacostia Light Rail Demonstration Line as well as completion of the D.C. Transit Alternatives Analysis on providing new bus and rail service in the District.

"Mr. Tangherlini was appointed director of the District Department of Transportation in November 2002, having served as acting director of the former division of transportation in the Department of Public Works starting in May 2000. Previously, he was chief financial officer of the Metropolitan Police Department from November 1998 to May 2000.

In the executive office of the mayor, Mr. Tangherlini was the leader of the short-term action team from January to April 1999 that developed high-visibility short-term initiatives for District of Columbia Mayor Anthony Williams. He also served as the Metropolitan Police Department deputy chief financial officer from March to November, 1998.

Before joining the District Government, Mr. Tangherlini was a senior program analyst in the office of the U.S. Secretary of Transportation where he helped negotiate a landmark Amtrak labor settlement and worked on thedevelopment of innovative approaches to infrastructure finance. He also worked in the Office of Management and Budget from 1991 to 1997, when he served as a special assistant, a program examiner and a budget preparation specialist.

Mr. Tangherlini began his transportation career as a seasonal laborer repairing potholes, cleaning highways and painting lines on asphalt for the Massachusetts Department of Public Works in 1983 and 1984.

Mr. Tangherlini has a B.A. and M.P.P. from the University of Chicago and an MBA from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania.

Mr. Tangherlini lives on Capitol Hill with his wife and two children where he is a member of the Capitol Hill Restoration Society, the Stanton Park Neighborhood Association, St. Peter's of Capitol Hill and other community groups.
