Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Protestors at Greenbelt station

Protestors at Greenbelt station

Am reading the issues of the Washington Post that I missed while I was away, and the article about the Saturday Sept. 24th anti-war protest was somewhat cavalier about the number of people in the city for the protest, using the subway system, etc.

As I was leaving the city for the airport, around 9:30 a.m., I encountered hundreds and hundreds of people at the Greenbelt Metro station. Normally on a Saturday, this station would be desert-like.

But it was packed with people carrying signs, going to the demonstration, and the parking lot was used as a staging area for Motor Coaches to drop off people outside of the city, for travel the rest of the way by public transit.
