Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Balancing stakeholder preferences for road use

I am involved in an e-conversation on a neighborhood list about parking vs. balance. People who are car-centric have a difficult time accepting that "balance" doesn't mean kow-towing to the car... Balance means entitlement to car owners... a distinction I made with regard to the use of car parking places for car owners vs. car users (participants in programs such as by Flexcar and Zipcar). I noticed that Dan Tangherlini has picked up my language... (see "High Cost of Free* Parking Revisited and Car Sharing in DC.")

How about a "roadwitch" for some calm? BBC reports that Ted Dewan, a British children's author and traffic campaigner is spearheading "DIY-traffic calming." The purpose of his campaign, done through whole living room sets on the street, down to the carpet, is to challenge drivers' entitlement to speed and urban space.

Maybe we need to have a critical mass "jaywalk" in honor of Charles Atherton?
