Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Ain't parking a b****? Not if you use the sidewalk.

Porter Square Books, Cambridge, Mass. From the Porter Square Books (Cambridge, Massachusetts) website:

Dear Customers,

On Saturday, February 11, we got a bit of a nasty surprise. An SUV jumped the curb in front of the store and came hurtling into Café Zing. The car took out the entire front of the store on the Café side and injured several customers. To the best of our knowledge, none of the injured customers sustained life-threatening injuries, nor were any of the Café's or the bookstore's employees injured.

We are, despite our boarded-up front windows, open for business although our hours will be a little different while the café rebuilds.
