Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

(Competing) Public meetings this Saturday

1. South Dakota Avenue NE Corridor Transportation Study (From Tom Levash)

DDOT is conducting a transportation and streetscape study along South Dakota Avenue, from Hamilton Street to its terminus atRoute 50/NY Avenue.

According to the consultant's website (Wilbur Smith & Associates), the study "will focus on comprehensive transportation enhancements and streetscape design to improve safety and the efficiency of movement for pedestrians, bicyclists, transit riders, and drivers along the corridor".

For anyone along South Dakota or nearby streets who is concerned about speeding, noise and traffic volumes, I hope you'll attend the first community meeting about this study. It will be held this Saturday (2/25), from 10 am to noon, at the Taft School, 1800 Perry Street, NE.
_______
Note that I couldn't find mention of the study on the consultant's website, nor on the DDOT website.

2. Anacostia Transportation Projects: DDOT Holds Day-long Open House, Sat., Feb 25 (from Bill Rice)

The District of Columbia Department of Transportation (DDOT), in cooperation with Councilmember Marion Barry and the Anacostia Coordinating Council, announces a full-day open house to discuss and tour the major DDOT projects slated for the Anacostia area in Ward 8. Called "Transforming Anacostia: Transportation and Development Projects Information Fair," it will be held on Saturday, February 25.

This one-day workshop, with bus tour and lunch, will be held from from 9 am to 2 pm, at Matthews Memorial Church, 2616 Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue, S.E. (1 block from Anacostia Metro and on several bus lines; because parking is limited, transit use is encouraged).

The following projects will be discussed: the rehabilitation and replacementof the South Capitol Street/Fredrick Douglass Bridge; new ramps for the 11th Street Bridge (the East Washington Project); development proposals for Poplar Point and the St. Elizabeths Campus; the renewal of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue, SE, as part of the Great Streets and Main Street programs; and the planned Anacostia Streetcar.

Transforming Anacostia will allow residents, business owners and interested parties to review, discuss, question and comment on these projects which are under study or planned. Continuous bus tours will be offered of the transportation projects under discussion. Free continental breakfast and box lunches will be provided.

Pre-registration is encouraged, but not required. For more information, please contact Mr. Philip Pannell, Anacostia Coordinating Council at 202-889-4900.
