Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Crisis at Brewmasters' Castle/Heurich Mansion

I haven't written about this in the blog, although I have written about it in email and went to a meeting (which I listed in the calendar on the right) about the financial crisis faced by the "most intact Victorian House interior" house museum extant in the United States--the Brewmasters' Castle/Heurich Mansion.

While this provides a great opportunity to discuss how and why we need a "master plan" for developing and funding such institutions in the city, they don't have time for that now. (In the meantime, you can read and comment on the draft DC historic preservation element produced in the Comprehensive Plan revision process.)

Rather than repeat the discussion, I suggest looking through the archives of the HistoricWashington listserv (yahoogroups.com) or the National Trust and other organizations in addressing the crisis.

As part of the First Friday activities in Dupont Circle (gallery walk), the Heurich Mansion will be open for tours and discussion of their financial problems, from 5 pm to 9 pm.

Check it out. It's a beautiful place.

This website has some history about the old Heurich Brewing Company.
