Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Cyclists beware

DCist has an entry, "Columbia Heights Cyclists Beware" about a bicyclist hit by a brick thrown from an upper-story window by Cardozo High School (11th and Girard Streets NW). The thrown brick broke his leg. (These types of actions are unfortunately not that unusual, and happen in other parts of the city as well. I remember bottles being thrown at me at 1st Street and Florida Avenue NW many years ago, when I was returning home late at night after a Billy Bragg concert.)

Many others commented about similar experiences, and an inability or disinterest of the police to do anything.

Clearly, this is a clear and convincing argument for setting up a sting with telephoto lens-based equipment to put the area-buildings under surveillance in an attempt to abet this problem.
