Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Fancy & Stable Grocery (400 K Street NE)

I have been familiar with this building ever since I moved to the city, living a few blocks away for most of the time I've been here. It's been vacant the whole time (and clearly for some time before that).

I never noticed until a few weeks ago that the painted sign on the side wall of this building is still slightly discernible.

Recently, I met someone from the neighborhood who has an excellent memory for all the various corner store businesses. I need to send this photo to him and see what he might remember about this store.

The status of this building communicates a lot about why stronger receivership and neglect laws are required.

Every time residents complain, the owner pulls building permits--never intending to do work--but that keeps the property from being taxed at the highest rate--a rate assessed only to vacant-neglected properties.
