Riding on the Metro

A cigarette butt on a subway car!As you can imagine, I was appalled to see this yesterday on my way up to Brookland. I have never seen this before. I have seen more people smoking on subway platforms, at least in the open-air ones... And the trash on the cars... So much for the great society...

Trash on the steps, Brookland stationOne of my "business" philosophies is what I call "design for maintenance," which is to build robustness into your systems and to eliminate ways for dirt and trash to collect.

The steps at Brookland station should be flush with the escalator housing. If so, litter wouldn't be able to collect in a gutter, because there would be no gutter.
