Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

I am supposed to be testifying about something in an hour, and have a major presentation to work on this weekend too. So no voluminous posting today, but look for stuff this weekend including:

-- Smart cars and cities
-- the Yankee Stadium vote in NYC (44-2 in favor...)
-- some interesting writings on New Orleans post-Katrina
-- Jane Jacobs' and parking
-- comments on the article in the Thursday District Extra section about a controversial affordable housing development in Eckington/Ward 5
-- Michael Schade's transformational ideas about Dupont Circle.

Have a good weekend and thanks for the spike in readership!

(The image is from a direct mail piece trying to sell you a condominium in City Vista. I've included images from their efforts before. I want to shop with the woman pictured on this direct mail piece; the same model is featured on the website. This goes back to the point that living in DC is hot and sexy, and all the people are beautiful, or at least, people moving to condos are beautiful, maybe those of us in other types of housing pull down the beauty curve...)
