Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Sidewalk treatments

Sidewalk treatments

I'm not going to be able to blog today because I am preparing for a presentation tonight and a hearing-presentation tomorrow.

Last night's presentation on transit-oriented development, featuring Mariia Zimmerman from the Center for Transit-Oriented Development and Dennis Leach from the Arlington County Transit Commission, was FABULOUS! Zimmerman's numbers-data are quite powerful.

I can maybe do an entry about the presentations tomorrow.

In the meantime I'll post some photos.

This is particularly relevant because DDOT is considering conglomerate sidewalks for H Street NE. Such sidewalks tend to be "common" in the area of the U.S. Capitol, like this photo at D Street and Delaware Avenue NE. (Maybe this weekend I'll get around to uploading many sidewalk treatment photos to flickr.)

I think conglomerate sidewalk treatments are a good thing.
