Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Baltimore understands that architecture matters, what's wrong with DC?

The Day in Pictures - baltimoresun.com.jpg"You'd be hard-pressed to find any architect's group that would give that an award," Donald C. Fry, president of the Greater Baltimore Committee, says of the building on Pier One.(Sun photo by Barbara Haddock Taylor) Apr 28, 2006.

See "Options studied for replacing Inner Harbor eyesore: Structure near Constellation on Pier One critical to ship, focal point for waterfront," from the Baltimore Sun.

My judgement must be clouded by the crappy new buildings in DC, but while I don't think this is a great building, it at the very least suffices, compared to this:
