Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

More phenomenal tourism business development resources

Peggys_Cove.jpgGovernment of Nova Scotia tourism ad (one of many). Nova Scotia has a variety of advertisements, focusing on different segments of the tourism market. DC's tourism promotion efforts tend to over-focus on the national experience. View other sample ads from Nova Scotia here:

-- Lunenburg Ad
-- Lobster Ad
-- Clam Harbour Ad
-- Cabot Trail Ad

I always say that I can learn from other places, and apply the work here. I continually discuss how I believe that we are not adequately developing and promoting the "tourism offer" in DC, and that other states, provinces, and countries do a much better job than DC, and better than the national government of the United States for that matter (e.g., compare Canada or Australia national government tourism marketing efforts to the U.S.; the comparison makes the U.S. look pathetic).

The Nova Scotia Department of Tourism, Culture, and Heritage, which is separate from the Nova Scotia Tourism Promotion Council, has a series of tourism development guides that are comprehensive workbooks to prepare business plans for starting and operating individual businesses:

Tourism Development Guides.

The Department of Tourism, Culture and Heritage has developed a series of tourism development manuals to assist Nova Scotians in the establishment of tourism businesses and in planning for the delivery of tourism services in the province. These guides are now available in downloadable PDF file format. An enhanced Marketing Guide for Individual Businesses is under development and will be available soon.

Okay so there isn't much relevance to this one in DC, but on the other hand, why not develop a campground in one of the under-utilized area national parks, in part to bring more attention to it, such as one of the Fort Circle Parks, or in one of the units in the Anacostia Trails Heritage Area in Prince George's County?

This is related to my thought that "Tourism Destination Assessment" methodologies, at least for areas with a high number of visitors, should include questions about whether or not there are hostel accommodations available.

I think that cities like Pittsburgh, Cleveland, and Baltimore ought to make a priority developing a hostel accommodation option, perhaps in association with Hostelling International USA.
