Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Artscape (Baltimore) this weekend

This weekend is Artscape, Baltimore's three-day art festival street party. One of the things I like about it is it's not just an art fair. Many of the exhibiting organizations are arts-related, from the Baltimore Symphony to children's arts programs and local museums, with a smattering of "public interest-related groups" like Community Forklift and Loading Dock.
Babes-Face PaintingAlso, Baltimore is smart in that there will be booths for Live Baltimore, their resident attraction promotion program and the Believe program. They take every opportunity to cross-promote their other marketing programs. They understand that you can't waste such opportunities (hint to other cities).
Decorative FurnitureAnd MTA, Maryland's Transit Administration, has a big booth promoting their various services. Also a good thing.
MTA presence at Artscape, July 2005In short, not much blogging from me this weekend (I'll be in the Forklift booth some, and spelling an artist as well.)

Yesterday's Baltimore Sun has a bunch of coverage, Artscape schedule, Artscape through the years (photos), Artscape 2006 performers, and "The nearby aLtscape festival has the traditional art-car show." The Artscape website also has a full set of information.
