Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Postcard exhibit at Washingtoniana

Yesterday I went to the Washingtoniana Collection at the Martin Luther King Library to look something up, and I checked out the current exhibition of DC postcards, curated by staff member Jerry McCoy, displaying items collected by the Library, Jerry McCoy, and Wes Ponder.

The exhibit was supposed to end in June, but will be up for a few more weeks. There are some gems, including a photo postcard of an Indian Motorcycle dealership at 412 H Street NE, the current home of Phyllis Outlaw & Associates law firm, and of Cannon Steakhouse, which used to be located, once upon a time, on 4th Street NE in the Florida Market area.

It's worth stopping by and taking a look. They worked hard to find items from NE, SE, and SW. As you can imagine, most postcards depict places in the NW quadrant.
Woodridge Rug Shop, Rhode Island Ave., Washington, DC
An original copy of this postcard, Woodridge Rug and Carpets, at 1715 Rhode Island Avenue NE, is on display in the exhibit. I always forget to check if this building is still extant. (There are two other Rhode Island Avenue NE postcards in the exhibit.)
