Combining bicycle and transit use
Taking the bike to Baltimore (B30 bus at Greenbelt Station).
According to an old press release "The Beginnings of a Combo Transit Surge?," the combination of bicycle-transit use is on the rise, and higher in North America than in Europe:
According to ridership numbers compiled by Bikemap.com, an estimated 1.3 million transit trips are taken every month in North America which passengers bring their bicycles with them on their commute. The municipality with the highest percentage of bikes among passengers is Palo Alto, California where 5% of transit trips include a bike. Santa Cruz, also in California, is second with 2.9%. However, since less than half of the transit agencies even keep track of the bus/bike figure, the 1.3 million number is a conservative estimate.
"The reported number is certainly higher than we anticipated," says Lisa Robinson, Sportworks Bike-Rack-for-Buses product manager. "The figure shows that a lot of communities are educating people on the benefits of taking their bikes with them when they ride the bus, train, or trolley."
And what is interesting is that the bus/bike commuting integration is a North American phenomenon. No where else in the world do commuters use bicycles along with mass transit buses on such a grand scale as they do in the U.S. and Canada.
______
Maybe MTA Maryland could learn about this "amazing new technology" and implement it on their bus system, particularly in Baltimore.
