Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

More than the Monuments

This new commemorative "Spectacular Peninsulas" license plate from the State of Michigan features the Mackinac Bridge, the Great Lakes, the Detroit skyline, pine trees and wheat fields. It makes wonder if DC's license plate should focus on cultural heritage and tourism issues as well, with a theme to promote the local experience (of course we'd need to focus on developing and improving the local experience) with a tagline and images focusing on "More than the Monuments."
