Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Pisco sours tasting tomorrow...

Pisco sourA pisco sour is made with egg whites.

Modern Liquors is one of DC's liquor stores that is making the successful transition from focusing on sales of products to alcoholics, to selling products to a "broader range" of customers. (Chat's Liquors on 8th Street SE is another example. They just replaced their tired plexiglass with new glass windows with the added sweetener of nice window displays. It makes a huge difference.

Each second Wednesday of the month, Modern Liquors does a wine and cheese tasting. They've developed a relationship with Cheesetique of Alexandria to source interesting cheeses. And as I overheard someone say last year at the wine tasting I went to: "It's nice to have more places in their neighborhood where we can walk to and shop."

I just got a notice from the Shaw Main Streets e-list that Modern Liquors is presenting a free tasting of drinks prepared with Pisco, the brandy-like liquor from Peru that is distilled from grapes. On Friday, August 4, 2006, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Pisco Sours (so delicious that they're the national drink of both Peru and Chile) and Pisco Martinis will be the featured samples. La Diablada is a newly introduced premium pisco from Peru, while the same producer has another brand called Machu Pisco.

I don't know if you noticed earlier in the week, an article in the Post about the increasingly numbers of Peruvians living in the Washington region, "Region's Peruvians Adapt With Cultural Identity Intact." This expansion of Modern Liquor's product line seems well-timed.

Modern Liquors (202-289-1414), located at 1200 9th Street, NW (at M Street) is accessible via the Green and Yellow subway Lines, Mount Vernon Square/7th Street-Convention Center station; and the DC Circulator.
