Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Speaking of parking at subway stations...

From the Nelson-Nygaard website:

Reducing Parking at Transit Stations

by Jeffrey Tumlin At the 2005 Rail~Volution conference, NelsonNygaard was asked to critique BART and WMATA's efforts to reduce replacement parking for new joint development projects. According to recent research, replacement parking can rarely be justified from a ridership and revenue standpoint. If they want to increase ridership and revenue, transit agencies should simply focus on joint development and allow an elimination of commuter parking at most urban rail stations.
