Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Wifi on buses (York Region, Toronto)

Wi-fi being launched on Viva BRT, York Region Transit, OntarioWi-fi being launched on Viva BRT, York Region Transit, Ontario, Greater Toronto.

From Jason Coulls:

We installed on Viva bus 5141, which is a Van Hool A330 vehicle. Being the first install, it was very much a case of "let's see how things go". The bus is wi-fi enabled, but that's not switched on yet. Photo attached (I'm on the left) taken just after it was up and running. Another 20 vehicles should follow suit this weekend (if all planning comes together).

The company responsible is Byte Media Inc. Byte Media is jointly owned by Baldhead Systems Inc and Durham Promotions Inc. The rest of the Viva buses are about to be fitted out in the same manner. The screen is a 26inch widescreen format LCD that has been ruggedised with a metal frame to make it more vandalproof, and this frame also provides shock absorbency to the LCD as the bus travels down the road. The computers are small form-factor PC's with GSM/GPRS connectivity that allows us to pull down data regarding news, stock markets, weather, etc. The adverts are beamed over using WIFI whilst the bus is at the depot.

I have suggested that DDOT work to have wi-fi enabled buses on the bus rapid transit service being launched on Georgia Avenue. I struck up an e-relationship with Jason while doing a bit of research on the topic.
