Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

The Debate Over Physically-Separated Bike Lanes Continues

NYC's Streetsblog is an excellent blog on public realm-spaces-streets for people, not cars. (Of course, all of us advocates from other places think NYC is the best in this department, but it is all relative, and we all learn from their extremely careful observation).

This shot of a separate bicycle lane in Copenhagen, from the blog entry The Debate Over Physically-Separated Bike Lanes Continues, really makes you think. This would require a complete rethinking about how the public realm is designed from building wall to building wall and from sidewalk to sidewalk with the street in between, but it's a provocation worth considering.
