Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Carousel on the National Mall

Carousel

In the winter, this is supposed to stay open until 5:00, and I was always hoping to get a shot with the lights on after the sun went down.

In December the sun goes down around 4:45. So it was extremely maddening to discover that the staff shuts it down early most nights. Granted, business is slow, but the mere sight of the spinning lights brings so much cheer to the Mall.

With the museums closing at 5:30, they should keep it open until at least 6:00 to let the exiting crowds a chance to ride it - or at least see it aglow.

And they definately need to improve the dumpy food kiosk nearby. This should be a destination for tourists and locals alike.
