Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Downtown Holiday Market

You know its Christmas time in Germany when, inexplicably and almost overnight, the public squares of most cities and towns are transformed into shopping bazaars offering everything from Bob Marley T-shirts to hand-carved Christmas ornaments. Another attraction adding interest to the 7th Street NW corridor this holiday season is the Downtown Holiday Market, every day from Monday December 11th to Sunday December 22nd. It's managed by Diverse Markets Management, a group that has grown out of the craft markets at Eastern Market.

Last year, it was piloted on the Old Convention Center site (see "Shopping, With an Urban Appeal," subtitled "Holiday Market Brings a European Tradition to the Heart of Downtown," from the Post) and this year it will be on F Street NW, adjacent to the Reynolds Center/Smithsonian American Art Museum and the National Portrait Gallery.
