Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Here's someone who needs to be hired as SHPO or director of DC Main Streets or...

According to the Lexington Herald-Leader, David Morgan, who served as State Historic Preservation Officer for Kentucky for the last 22 years, is moving to DC, without a job. See "Preservationist David Morgan moving to D.C.: HAD HELPED START MAIN STREET PROGRAM IN KENTUCKY."

From the article:

Across Kentucky, David Morgan worked tirelessly in historic preservation to help save Civil War battlefields, old railroad depots and houses where famous people once lived. Working for the Kentucky Heritage Council, he was instrumental in setting up the Kentucky Main Street Program, the widening of Paris Pike, and a survey of Kentucky's African-American landmarks.

Today he retires. His leadership will be missed, said preservationists across the state. "David had ideas where to get grants. He counseled us all the way along," said Helen Dedman, one of the organizers of the James Harrod Trust in Harrodsburg, which Morgan helped start.

From the presentations and such I've seen from their staffers over the past few years, they do fabulous work. Their presentation about the experience of their 25 years of the statewide KY Main Street program at the 2004 National Trust conference in Louisville was really really great. (I wish that other people from DC besides me had attended that session...)
