Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

O'Malley announces choice for Maryland transportation secretary

From the Washington Business Journal. Interestingly enough, Mr. Porcari is the point man on the "town center" development project that the University of Maryland has initiated to bring life and a center to College Park. See "Officials clamor for more input into East Campus plans" from the UMCP student newspaper The Diamondback, and the blog Rethink College Park, and the entry "Raising the Profile of East Campus Redevelopment."

I had planned to write about this project in the context of wider Rte. 1 and Prince George's County revitalization, civic engagement, and authenticity issues sometime over the next week.
