Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Condomania in Seattle

The Seattle Times has a nice overview piece about condominium construction and conversion downtown. About 6,000 units are in process according to the article, "The year of the condo in downtown Seattle." An interesting point made is an estimate that nationally investor interest (speculator) involvement is about 30% but in Seattle only about 15%, which means their production and absorption rate is more sustainable. The percentage of investor involvement would be an interesting number to figure out for DC.
