Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Artomatic and regionalism

At a brunch discussion yesterday one of the participants made a good point about Artomatic being in Arlington--that it helps promote more regional thinking, rather than the typically hermetic thinking we have. (Speaking of hermeticism, I still think it's embarassing that the Gateway Arts District, along Route 1 in Prince George's County from Mt. Rainier to Hyattsville, has an incedible list of accomplishments in the few short years it has been in business--including getting the Washington Glass School to relocate there after their displacement from DC as a result of the baseball stadium--we have more cultural assets in DC, but we aren't doing much with them, especially at the neighborhood level.)

He suggested that before Artomatic comes back to DC that maybe it should make a couple stops in Maryland, just to get us moving around and connecting.
------------
While I haven't made it around the entire Artomatic yet, I did come across two DC photographers who participate in Flickr, Furcafe and Daquella Manera--they also have companion photoblogs. (I have thought about trying to exhibit photos at Artomatic. Maybe sometime in the future.)
