Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Focused development of arts-based businesses in the UK

This article, "Artist who's stirring up a storm," from the Dewsbury Today newspaper in the UK has a link to a cultural development agency, Loca, that sounds pretty interesting.

From the website:

Loca is a cultural development agency with a specialist arts-and-regeneration focus, working in Kirklees, West Yorkshire, to:

• promote creative activities in local communities
• support artists and small businesses in the creative industries
• use arts in community consultation and local regeneration

we work with:

• organisations, agencies and services who work with local communities
• individual artists, craftspeople, designers, performers and musicians wanting support to start up or develop their business
• community groups who want to find new ways of tackling an issue or getting their message across
• local arts and cultural groups
