Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

The state of bicycling, in Europe

DC1974, Ken Firestone, and the Arlington County Commuter blog call our attention to an article in the Friday Wall Street Journal about bicycling, "Building a Better Bike Lane - Bike-friendly cities in Europe are launching a new attack on car culture. Can U.S. catch up?"

The article also has a table about better U.S. cities for bicycling. DC isn't listed, probably because we don't have much in the way of dedicated cycling paths. However, DC has about 4.5% of work-related trips made via bicycle, which is higher than some of the cities listed. Of course, the region doesn't come out that high. (Arlington has a decent percentage too.)
