Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Being fair (probably) screws DC government officials

because they are expected to lean in favor of developers.

That's probably why Carol Mitten isn't being reappointed to the Zoning Commission (nor kept her job as director of the DC Office of Property Management) and why Bill Crews has been fired as Zoning Administrator.

Meanwhile, someone gets overpaid $75,000 and petitioned to keep the money... See "$75,000 payroll error one of D.C.'s largest," from the Washington Times. Or people who copy without attribution other people's reports?

Oh, and I forgot to mention Merrit Drucker, who for a time was in charge of the ward-based neighborhood service coordinators. Apparently he resigned because he believed that (1) the coordinators should be based in the Wards, not City Hall; and (2) complaints over stepped up enforcement. (I did think they were over-focused on enforcement over education and "suasion"--it's a delicate line but still, having a bulldog in that position is key.)
