Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

What's in a barrel of oil

What's in a barrel of oil

Using data from the Energy Information Administration of the U.S. Department of Energy, and an estimate of $2 billion/day for the cost of the Iraq War, there is an additional cost of $2.89 per gallon of oil product distilled from one barrel of oil (I think I used 42 gallons, the official EIA figure).

Since the U.S. federal excise tax for gasoline is 18 cents/gallon, I don't think the cost of this aspect of maintaining the asphalt nation is adequately covered...
