Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Ebenezer's Coffee Shop and a bit of truth stretching

I have mentioned in the past that Ebenezers Coffeehouse at 2nd and F Streets NE proved me wrong.

I believed that SEC office workers wouldn't venture out of their building to the big bad adjoining streets. But Ebenezers Coffehouse is the taj mahal of coffee shops (it helps to have a lot of donations to be able to subsidize construction, something small businesses don't often have). They do a great job, provide great service, free wi-fi, etc., and so they do get a lot of day time business.

It goes to show that if you provide a high quality product and you're properly located, you should benefit.

But... while the building was an eyesore, derelict, and a nuisance before, it was never a crack house. But that's what Pastor Batterson claimed in a presentation on Tuesday, as well as in the Church's 2006 annual report...

Still, their focus on the here and now is interesting...
