Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Mobility stuff

1. Stephen Rees's blog focuses on transit, not just in Vancouver, BC, where he is based.

2. One of the items he linked to is a series from the area's free weekly, The Tyee, about going to a free fare transit system. This article, "Paying for Free Transit," has links to the other 4 pieces in the series.

3. There is a new NYC area blog called Walking is Transportation.

4. On the New Mobility elist we are discussing fares and free transit. Ian Wingrove of the London Council makes the point that seniors and students do not pay to ride buses in London. But that this relates to capacity issues and now that the system has much higher ridership, it's not just a matter of using spare capacity
