Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

The Washington Redskins as a metaphor for "rational" planning in DC

Rather than a workmanlike attitude towards building systems and processes designed to produce excellence, the Redskins always look for the quick fix based on individuals as saviours, be it a Deion Sanders or a Joe Gibbs. The New England Patriots built a system. See Sally Jenkins' column from today's Post, "Brady Gets It, All Right," and think about it when you read the most current issue of themail at DCWatch, or the editorial page of the Washington Post, or the District Extra section in the Thursday Post, or any of the city's community newspapers such as the Current or the Hill Rag.

World class is more than telling yourself and your peers that you're great. It's following through. It's contributing to others. It's more than a class in building self-esteem.
