Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Making a right turn: bikes vs. cars

(I got crushed by a car last week this way. My bike is totalled--although not too damaged in theory. But new wheels, a fork, and labor add up quickly. Fortunately I am not too banged up.)
Biking in Oregon

If you ask me, the Oregon law makes sense as it is. (Via the blog Urban Richmond.) Click on the graphic to go to the full image and play the video. The problem is that drivers don't expect, as the police said, that there is a vehicle already on the right. In my accident, the police determined that we were both at fault. But this could indicate a problem with DC laws too.

See this link for more coverage from the Portland Oregonian on bicycling and accidents.
