Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Preaching

Ironically, last night I was advising someone who has an important meeting today with a high level institutional official about a big development project. The organization's efforts are being derailed by an unauthorized derailment proposed by a different official from the institution.

I counseled the advocate to talk about "appreciating the enthusiasm" of the proposal, even though it is misguided, and in reference to another document recently sent around, and derided, that it is "a good first effort."

While saying this I was struck by the recognition that I am quick to criticize--I would prefer to say that I am quick to analyze but that people see this too often as criticism, although often I catch myself and couch my criticism in some extra packaging to ease it over.

Sure I am being less hardcore, but I am also focused on achievement, and not wasting time.

That requires that people be at the table, recognize differences, recognize commonalities, and move forward.

It isn't easy though.
