Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space

"A community’s physical form, rather than its land uses, is its most intrinsic and enduring characteristic." [Katz, EPA] This blog focuses on place and placemaking and all that makes it work--historic preservation, urban design, transportation, asset-based community development, arts & cultural development, commercial district revitalization, tourism & destination development, and quality of life advocacy--along with doses of civic engagement and good governance watchdogging.

Newspapers and subway expansion

In an editorial in the City weekly edition of the New York Times, "Do Right by the No. 7 Extension," the paper argues for spending more money to do the right thing. Cf. the Washington Post, re the Tysons Tunnel, "Tunnel Vision: There's more to the Dulles Metro extension than the Tysons controversy."

In the long run, building a better more robust system is an investment in the future, and in future generations.

The Post needs to be more of a leader than a follower.
